The LAPS Reading Program is where kindness and connection come to life! Once a month, children ages 6–12 can spend a cozy 45 minutes at the shelter, reading their favorite stories aloud to our feline friends. With just 2–3 students per session, kids get a calm and confidence-building environment to practice their reading skills—while our cats soak up the gentle sounds of human voices and the warmth of compassionate company. It’s a beautiful exchange of comfort and care: children grow as readers, and our shelter cats receive the human interaction they crave. Together, they turn storytime into healing time.

LAPS Reading Schedule :
"Douglas Park Community School recently had the pleasure of participating in LAPS' reading program, where our Grade 3 students were given the wonderful opportunity to read with shelter cats and kittens. The experience was truly unforgettable. The LAPS staff were incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and welcoming - ensuring our students felt comfortable and excited from the moment they arrived.
The highlight of the program was seeing the pure joy on our students’ faces as they visited LAPS and interacted with the animals. Not only did this program help foster a genuine love of reading, but it also allowed our students to form meaningful connections within our community.
We are so grateful for the care and commitment LAPS put into making this experience special for our students. Thank you, LAPS, for offering such a heartwarming and impactful program!"
