The Doghouse is a unique partnership between LAPS and Correctional Service Canada (CSC). The program operates at Fraser Valley Institution in Abbotsford, a federal institution for women.
Participants take part in an employment training program where they gain hands-on experience working with dogs in a professional kennel setting. Through the program, they develop valuable transferable employment skills in animal care and welfare, training, canine first aid, and grooming, The program also provides a therapeutic and supportive environment where participants can build confidence, develop meaningful connections, and work toward personal growth.
Since its inception in 2006, over 200 women have participated in the Doghouse program. Eligible participants may also volunteer or complete work placements at the Patti Dale Animal Shelter. Many of the women who’ve gone through the program continue to work with dogs after completing their time at the institution. We believe this program can be a catalyst for change in the people who participate. It can give participants the skills, confidence and knowledge to pursue a career that they love.
The Doghouse operates as a daycare, boarding and training facility for the public. When community members choose the Doghouse for boarding, daycare, or training services, their support helps fund the program. With our unique setup and smaller group sizes, the Doghouse can give every dog extra attention, exercise, and playtime. While staying with us, dogs enjoy lots of off leash time in spacious fenced play areas, individualized care and interaction with staff and program participants, enrichment tailored to the dog’s needs, and a calm, low-stress environment focused on the dog’s comfort and well-being.
This program also provides an option for dogs to go home with one of the women participating in the kennel program. This allows the dogs to stay in a low stress, home-like environment during their stay.
When you choose the Doghouse, your support helps sustain this program and create meaningful opportunities for the women in it. Book a stay, join a training session, or donate today — and help make a difference for both dogs and people.
