Animal Pathway Planning Coordinator

Under the direction of the Director, Animal Welfare, the Animal Pathway Planning Coordinator (APPC) position is responsible for many of the day-to-day operating procedures governing and facilitating the adoptions and intakes of cats and dogs at LAPS. This is an animal “hands on” position in conjunction with administrative and customer service tasks. The APPC position will facilitate and oversee adoptions, intakes, surrenders and adoption returns. They will work with the Coordinator team to keep up to date on all behaviour and veterinary needs for the animals to ensure successful placement. The APPC will assist the Director, Animal Welfare with placement of Working Whiskers Cats. They will assist with overseeing volunteer foster families. The APPC will work with the Communications department to create social media content to promote adoptable animals and will ensure that animals have the shortest length of stay possible, while still ensuring a successful long term placement.
ADOPTIONS
• In cooperation with the coordinators team will ensure compliance with the Canadian Standards of Care for Animal Shelters and the Fear Free Sheltering Program for the animals in our care.
• Oversee the adoption program to ensure it is effective and runs efficiently. Make recommendations to the Director of Animal Welfare to improve systems and add programs.
• Process adoption applications through the LAPS portal and paper application submissions
• Oversee and facilitate all adoption interviews and meet-and-greet visits
• Oversee and facilitate Foster-to-Adopt arrangements
• Ensure support to adopters through adoption follow up calls/emails/events.
• Oversee the promotion of animals for adoption through accurate record keeping, communications and advocacy. This includes maintaining current information on the LAPS
website, Petfinder and kennel cards to reflect daily availability and status of animals, including detailed biographies and appealing animal photographs.
• Process surrenders applications (including conducting interviews, gathering history of the animals, and coordinating temperament assessments)
• Implement and educate regarding shelter diversion options for guardians in alignment with LAPS social services programs.
• Measure Length of Stay and ensure removal of “roadblocks” that could increase an animals stay at LAPS unnecessarily.
• Train new animal care team members in daily operations such as husbandry duties, opening, closing duties, animal introductions and facilitating adoptions.
• Ensure behaviour modification/training needs are communicated to potential new guardians for animals.
• Coordinate and oversee Compassion and Emergency Boarding for animals when requested.
• Collaborates with Director of Animal Welfare, Executive Director and Animal Health Coordinator to make humane euthanasia decisions when necessary.
• Proactively seek best practice sheltering, behaviour and pathway planning techniques and standards for implementation at LAPS, to ensure the highest level of care and positive
outcomes
COMMUNICATIONS
• Ensure the Philanthropy and Communications department has relevant and high-quality photos and videos of animals to promote adoptions, fundraising and advertising of “found cats”
VOLUNTEER ADMINISTRATION
• Assist in the recruitment of volunteers to support the Animal Welfare department
• Support volunteers by providing training seminars related to the work.
• Work in collaboration with the rest of the Animal Welfare team to recognize volunteers and their contribution to LAPS, informal and formal events
EVENT COORDINATION
• Support adoption events, including, but not limited to, Animal Wellness Clinics and pet store adoption promotions.
OTHER DUTIES
• Maintain a professional collaborative working relationship with pet store partners and other shelters or rescue organizations.
• Maintain an adequate retail supply and promote the sale of products to help animals transition into their homes stress free.
• Oversee the ordering of supplies as needed
• Cover Reception break as needed
• Assist with animal care and closing shift duties
• Other duties as assigned
• Support and promote the vision and strategic plan of LAPS
• Ensure positive public relations and customer service practices
• Ensure compliance with all protocols, procedures, and policies of LAPS

• Work is performed concurrently in an office and animal shelter environment, with required attendance at offsite venues
• At times extensive sitting, standing or activity during entire shift if required
• Occasional exposure to various outdoor conditions
• Occasional driving on public streets, under a variety of traffic conditions
• Work performed both in and out of shelter requires lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and other strenuous activities. Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs
• Interaction with children, adolescents and adults from the public is frequent and requires respectful, empathetic, and professional behaviour always
• Frequent exposure to computer video terminal and computer peripherals
• Workdays are 8 – 10 hours and may be assigned. Work schedules are flexible depending on the needs of the organization. This position requires work on evenings and weekends shifts for special events or programming
• Exposure to potentially aggressive, unruly, sick, diseased and parasite infested animals with potential exposure to zoonotic conditions
• Safe handling exposure to chemical cleaners
• Environment can be noisy, odorous, and stressful, both physically and emotionally
• 1 to 3 years minimum experience working in a shelter, veterinary clinic, or other industry focused environment with direct exposure to dogs and cats
• Animal behaviour and husbandry knowledge, customer service skills, an overall knowledge of shelter operations and goals will be preferred
• Experience working with feral cats an asset
• Passion for animal welfare and behaviour
• Strong interpersonal skills, personable, outgoing, patient, professional, and able to get along well with a variety of people
• Ability to resolve problems and address customer dissatisfaction
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines is required
• Computer and internet savvy. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office tools and power point
• Photography experience and knowledge of photo editing programs an asset
• Comfortable working with many breeds of dogs and cats and willing to acquire animal behaviour and handling knowledge and experience
• Maturity, good judgment, and a professional appearance
• The ability to remain pleasant and calm even in stressful situations
• Physical strength and agility to lift heavy animals, equipment, and supplies
• Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License
• Minimum high school degree or equivalent
• Fear Free Certification is required
• Veterinary or animal behaviour formal education an asset
• Basic computer literacy, including typing required
• 40 hours per week (evening and weekend work will be required based on LAPS needs)
• Workdays are Tuesday through Saturday and can vary between 8 - 10 hours between 7am and
7pm depending on operational needs.
