Adoption Process

How to Adopt a Dog or Puppy from LAPS

Step 1: View Our Adoptable Dogs

*Please note that at this time, the shelter is opened to view the dogs and puppies 7 days a week from 11am – 5pm. All adoptions will be processed by appointment only after an adoption application has been submitted. Please click here to view all our adoptable dogs.

Step 2: Interview with Adoption Counsellor

If you see a dog you are interested in, the next step is to fill out our adoption application. This application will give our adoption counsellors the necessary information to ensure you match with the right dog depending on your lifestyle and household. Please take the time to fill the application out completely. Adoption applications can be found in the write up on each animal’s profile.

Visit the LAPS Portal to complete an application online.

Step 3: Taking Your New Dog Home

If you are selected to adopt the dog you applied for, an adoption counsellor will contact you directly. You will then be ready to take your new dog home! Our adoption team will have you sign an adoption contract, pay the applicable fees and provide you with lots of tips to help you transition your new dog into their new environment. Prior to adoption, all LAPS dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, tattooed or microchipped, and receive their first set of vaccinations. The adoption fee also includes a free check-up with a veterinarian within three days of adoption and six weeks of free Petsecure pet insurance. Now its time to take your new family member home! LAPS will be here to support you with your adoption transition!

Annual Costs* for Dogs
After the initial adoption fee, there are a variety of expenses that pet owners need to be prepared to face. To help you figure out what to expect, we’ve put together a table with the annual cost of caring for a dog or cat.

* All costs are approximate and may vary.

Private Adoption Info

New Beginnings Private Adoptions

Private Adoption through LAPS allows pet owners who need to rehome their pets to list their animals on our website, giving them greater visibility to potential adopters. This service helps connect pets with loving homes while ensuring the entire adoption process is managed privately between the current owner and the adopter. LAPS provides the platform for exposure, but all communication, decision-making, and final arrangements are handled directly by the owner and the prospective adopter.
