Volunteer Profiles

  • Cindy E.

  • Volunteer of the Season for: SPRING 2009

LAPS salutes Volunteer of the Season Cindy E., known around the shelter as ‘The Cat Lady’.

“I am pleased with my selection as Volunteer of the Season,” said Cindy. Cindy’s weekly visits to the Cat Cottage began five years ago when LAPS first started up. “I think my husband Chris deserves to share in this recognition,” she added. “He was with me at the beginning when a handyman was needed to help convert the old kennel into a useable space for LAPS.”

The care of the cats is Cindy’s “baby” and to this day all her hard work and effort are directed toward their happiness and comfort. “I enjoy helping the cats – they were my first love,” said Cindy. “I also enjoy working with the LAPS staff as they are a great bunch and care so much about the animals.”

  • Donnie Heron

  • Volunteer of the Season for: Winter 2008

Now retired, Donnie has spent the last 5 years fostering dogs for LAPS.

It is his unconditional love, affinity with dogs and knowledge of their habits that keeps Donnie Heron coming back for more! Now retired, Donnie has spent the last 5 years fostering dogs for LAPS.

Donnie takes those dogs, already with behaviour issues, that probably would develop even more serious problems if left in a shelter environment. Donnie loves the way the dogs react when they realise they are being loved and cared for. “I just spoil them and give them lots of love and they give me unconditional love back,” he says.

Rarely without a foster dog, Donnie takes them everywhere with him (some have even been skiing and sailing!) and makes sure they are well socialized.

“It warms my heart,” he explains, “that when the dogs leave me, they’re getting a new home and another chance.”

  • Shannon Janzen

  • Volunteer of the Season for: Fall 2007

It was his love for animals that first brought Shannon Janzen to the LAPS shelter.

“Every year I’d come into the shelter and donate food for the animals,” he said. “It was the staff that talked me into volunteering.” Shannon is the “lawn cutting guy”, who, for the last year has spent an average of two hours, three times a week, keeping the shelter grounds neat and tidy. A diesel mechanic by trade and owner of two miniature pinschers, Shannon gets satisfaction in making life better for the animals and can’t see quitting any time soon!
