Birthday girl’s gift to LAPS – $1,070

Karlie Cranna celebrated her 12th birthday with donation to Langley’s animal shelter.
Children love to receive presents, but Langley Times carrierKarlie Cranna celebrated her 12th birthday on Friday by giving awaymore than $1,000 to the Langley Animal Protection Society.

“I have a really humungous surprise,” she told LAPS manager Sean Baker, his colleagues and volunteers.

“I have raised $1,070.98 for the animal shelter, and here’s the money,” she said, offering Baker a blue cloth shopping back with the notes and coins.

But that wasn’t all.

“We also have blankets and towels in the car, and treats for the cats and dogs, and a dog house.”

Karlie, who lives in Brookswood and attends Alice Brown Elementary, said she started the fund raising by making muffins and cookies and selling them on the sidewalk in front of her house.

She made cupcakes, sold drinks, and sold necklaces which she made with her mother, Jen.

She canvassed a Subway restaurant, a gas station and a local vet, leaving containers she had made herself in which people could drop in their donations.

“Why LAPS?” Baker asked.

Surrounded by LAPS workers, her mother, younger sister Jaymie, grandmother and aunt, Karlie replied, “I just like what you guys have done for animals, and I love all animals.”

The donation was made in LAPS’ office at 26220 56 Ave., where a new $2.3 million shelter is being built at the seven acre site. It will include a new office, kennels, cages and dog runs.

After the presentation, it was Baker’s turn for surprises as he took the cover off a birthday cake and presented it to a beaming Karlie.

Then a volunteer announced that Karlie was named Volunteer of the Season. She will receive a certificate and have her photo up on the wall of the LAPS office.

Later, after cuddling two of the shelter’s canine occupants, Scooter and Lacey, Karlie said that she would like to become a vet.
