Your Donations at Work

Your donations at work:

By giving to LAPS, you are giving lost unwanted and abandoned animals a second chance at a happy and healthy life.  Without you, we cannot continue to do our life saving work in Langley.  We know that we can make a difference in this community with your support.  Although LAPS is a small organization, we have the spirit to make it happen.  But only with you at our side.

Since 2003, we have cared for more than 6000 dogs and 3000 cats.  We have done this by staying true to our belief that each creature that we help will go on to make someone's life that much better.  With the help of generous people like you, we have developed a number of programs that are making a difference.  Thank you!

Medical care for all - It is hard to feel happy when you are sick or hurting.  Sadly, many animals arrive at shelters in poor condition.  Whether as a result of an accident or a lifetime of substandard care, these creatures need our help to get better.  We are committed to providing the best care possible for all.  This not only includes the basics such as spay/neuter, vaccines and flea treatment, but making sure that every animal that leaves the shelter is in better shape than when it arrived.  Having the ability to provide such things as dental cleanings for middle aged dogs and cats will usually result in them being happier and healthier for much longer.

Training for all shelter dogs – The reality is that  many dogs that make their way into shelters have never received proper training.  This makes them difficult to handle and hard to re-home.  This was our experience until we committed ourselves to changing the process.  And in doing so, we have provided a future for many dogs that would likely have never found homes.  By providing basic obedience training for all LAPS shelter dogs prior to adoption, we are creating positive experiences for new dog parents. Not only are we teaching old dogs new tricks, but we are giving people the tools and resources to be successful.

Helping cats through spay and neuter - Just like Bob Barker always said, “Spay and neuter your pets!”.  Cats have a special place in our hearts, but their ability to reproduce quickly and frequently presents an ongoing challenge.  It has been calculated that two unaltered cats (male, female) can produce up to 420, 000 offspring in seven years.  There are simply not enough homes for all of these cats.  The only way to break this reproductive nightmare is through spay & neuter.  Each month we spay or neuter twenty cats in the community.  Some maybe stray cats and others belong to people who cannot afford to have them fixed. One cat at a time, we are make a difference.

Working with inmates to help dogs – In 2006 we partnered with the Fraser Valley Institution for Women (FVI) to create a program that would benefit both dogs and female inmates.  We established a dog kennel within the grounds at FVI in Abbotsford and developed a program to train selected inmates to train shelter dogs.  Not only have we been very successful in re-homing many dogs through this training program, but we have developed the program into a work skills training opportunity where the inmates manage the day-to-day operation of an active kennel.  This is truly a win-win!
