About LAPS
The Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS) is a registered non-profit charitable society established in 2003 by a dedicated group of volunteers eager to see positive change in the way stray, lost and unwanted animals were sheltered and cared for in Langley. The LAPS model focuses on maintaining a working relationship with the community to meet and overcome the challenges facing animals in Langley.
Based at the Patti Dale Animal Shelter in Aldergrove, LAPS staff and volunteers use a progressive and humane approach to care for more than 1500 dogs, cats and large animals each year. All animals that are cared for by LAPS benefit from environmental enrichment, frequent exercise, nutritious food and a lot of TLC provided by staff and volunteers. Medical care is also available for all those in need to ensure that each animal has the best chance at a happy and healthy life.
Under the leadership of the LAPS Board of Directors, LAPS staff and volunteers have developed unique programs to benefit the Langley community. Such programs include: a free cat spay/neuter program to address the growing stray cat population, basic obedience training for all shelter dogs prior to adoption to increase the rate of successful adoptions, a volunteer program that integrates volunteers into the day-to-day operation of the Patti Dale Animal Shelter, and a work skills development program at the Fraser Valley Institution that teaches female inmates to train shelter dogs.
As the animal control service provider for both the City and the Township of Langley, LAPS staff respond to and investigate a variety of dog and large animal complaints. From straying dogs and cattle running loose, to reports of dogs biting humans, LAPS staff respond quickly and efficiently seven days a week to maintain public safety. Because LAPS staff have a genuine desire to help, their caring and professional approach that focuses on education to gain compliance with municipal regulations, LAPS has reduced the number of repeat complaints by 50% and has increased the number of dog licenses sold each year by more than 180% since 2003.
Although LAPS was blessed to move into a brand new state-of-the-art Patti Dale Animal Shelter provided by the Township of Langley in March 2009, we continue to depend on the generous financial support of the Langley community to provide care to the many animals in need. Private donations make up more than 25% of our annual budget, and without this support, we could not continue to do our life saving work.
